The Best of 2024 Powered by Nigerians in the Fashion and Entertainment Industries.
If you are reading this, congratulations on making it to another year!
A few hours into 2025, and I finally have my 2024-wrapped in your hands, which is made of 60% fashion and 40% entertainment, but first I want to thank you for riding with us for the past 11 months (yes, this publication started off 11 months ago) through all the captivating highs and chaotic lows. I am grateful for this community, all 100 of you, our subscribers. Thank you for following Chrysé’s journey, always indulging us (whether as a reader, contributor, and/or collaborator), giving us your feedback, and spreading the word. Every single gesture is greatly appreciated, as we would be non-existent without your readership, and best believe we are going to have an epic and even amazing 2025 together, so stay with us 💚
Enjoy the read and best wishes for the new year!
Here on out, ‘Nigeria’ will be referred to as ‘Naija.’
As has always been the case, I was in awe of my country people in the previous year, and these are some of my favorite things from the fashion and entertainment scenes.
Best Films ⬇️
I have watched more Nollywood titles on Prime Video than any other streaming platform, so it is only reasonable that it serves as the inspiration for this category. My top 10 in no particular order: Beyond The Veil S2 (season one), Christmas In Lagos, The Betrayed, Soft Love, Kill Boro, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, A Night In 2005, Love and Life, Family Gbese, and Miss PJ.
My Mount Rushmore of entertainers in ‘24 was Rema, Ayra Starr, Tems, and Omah Lay ⬇️
Ouuuuu, these four gave us good music, fashion, and completely insane performances… just basically printing a mark in my subconscious. They have been kicking it since the first day of 2024, and not once did any of them take their foot off the gas. They individually achieved so many things that I cannot begin to quantify.
P.S. Huge congratulations to our superstars on their Grammy nominations! Year after year, and still, ‘proud’ does not even begin to cut it!
Some exceptional pieces from 2024 by Naija-owned clothing brands: ⬇️
Àso Nigeria's 'droop bejewelled pants' and ‘NOK’ dress in yellow, Cladini Studio’s ‘mari bubu,’ Desirée Iyama’s ‘viola midi dress’ in colors bronze and silver, Hertunba’s ‘ama dress’ and ‘adure knit dress,’ Kílèntár’s ‘Ito knit mini fringe dress’ in yellow, and Kai Collective’s ‘Adesuwa ruched cotton long dress’ in white, ‘zahirah leopard print devore halter neck midi cape dress,’ ‘Yumi faux suede laser cut skirt’ in red, ‘Nao cotton logo embroidered racer back vest top' in white, ‘London Togo leather maxi handbag,’ ‘Amira technical organza oversized long sleeve shirt dress,’ and the ‘Kaili oversized cotton logo printed t-shirt’ in white.
Fashion Films & Campaigns
My top fashion films/campaigns from 2024 are powered by 4 brands, starting with Kai Collective, of course! I loved ‘The Kai Effect: On Becoming a Woman,’ ‘Enter the Comfort Zone,’ and ‘Animal Instinct.’ I also adored Àso Nigeria’s ss24 ‘Emerged’ (poetry narrated by my queen, Sanni), 'The Nok Variants - Made in Lagos' and ‘Aso Odun - A Christmas Special’; Ashluxe’s ‘Kalakuta Republic,’ and Ìsàlẹ Èkó from Derin’s ‘Èkó Carnival’ drop.
Favourite Looks From Fashion and Entertainment Icons: ⬇️
From Tiwa Savage in a three-piece monochromatic suit for her WAG tour leg in NYC to Emmanuel Goodnews in a black-striped three-piece suit, the guests at the Emmy Kasbit experience celebrating the brand’s one decade in fashion, Teminikan at the movie premiere of Christmas In Lagos, Bisola Aiyeola at the movie premiere of Everybody Loves Jenifa (ELJ), Naija artists at Louis Vuitton Men’s ss25 show on the eve of the Olympics, Diane Russet’s corporate chic skirt-suit, every piece on Ugo Monye’s ss25 collection, Ademola Lookman’s àgbàdá moment at CAF 2024 where he won the award for African Footballer of the Year (Men), Temi Otedola walking for L’Oreal Paris in that bomb red dress a few months into being an official ambassador of the brand, Osas Ighodaro’s takeover at Paris Fashion Week, Beauty Tukura’s otherworldly dress by Weiz Dhurm Franklyn to the MTV Base nomination party, featured actors on The Waiter—Bucci Franklin and Shine Rosman photographed by Kashope, Ini Edo’s standout looks at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, the promotional shoots for the ELJ movie with Zack as head stylist, everything about the fashion in the Christmas In Lagos film—both in the movie and for every promotional video I have seen—big ups to the costume designer, Dahmola!! Etc.
Nollywood Actress and Fashion IT Girl, Temi Otedola, and Afrobeats Sensation, Ayra Starr, at Fashion Week and More. ⬇️
My glamour girls showed up for brands like Casablanca, Balenciaga, Versace, Giambattista Valli, Coperni, Erdem, Off-White, Boss, Stella McCartney, Elie Saab, Fendi, and events like The Grammys, BOF 500 gala, etc. 2025? I know they are coming for everything and then some!
How dare I skip Rema’s new direction in art and fashion? Never! ⬇️
My jaw drops every time there's a new photo on social media, and I am yet to find any look or artistic direction of his that I do not like.
And the folks closets I need to raid?? ⬇️
Fisayo Longe,Temi Otedola, Nonye Udeogu, Akin Faminu, Bella Okagbue, Hafsah Mohammed, Wunmi Bello, Dodos, Mayowa Nicholas, and Fikkypearl. All incredible style influences…Mix their individual styles in a jar, and you could create mine!
Nigerian weddings are synonymous with fashion shows/red carpet events, so this ‘wrapped’ will be incomplete without them. ⬇️
My favorite looks from celebrants and guests alike: Sharon Ooja’s liquid gele moment styled by Dahmola, Andrea Iyamah’s Edo bridal outfit, which she styled herself, all the looks (Ugo Monye, Tubo, Deji & Kola) worn by Chioma and Davido at their traditional wedding—all styled by Yasmeen Ntwari, Dimma Umeh in custom Emagine by Bukola for her civil wedding, Simi Sanya for #tyloverocks24, Veekee James’ church-wedding dress, Veekee James and Femi Atere’s first traditional outfit, and again, Veekee James as a guest to #heavenonearth24 !
The Magicians behind every iconic look ⬇️
A major shout-out and round of applause to the stylists that kept my soul fed in 2024: Uduak, Yomo Daj, Dahmola, Emmanuel Goodnews, Swazzi, Zack, and Swanky Jerry.
I also found out some of my favorite names in fashion/entertainment to be of Naija heritage. I still cannot believe this, but hey, rapper and record producer—Tyler, The Creator, all-year best-dressed man—Wisdom Kaye, and country music artist—Shaboozey, do in fact hail from the motherland.
What is a Chrysé article without music accompaniment? Here is a playlist consisting of Afrobeat songs that made my 2024 and that of others. ⬇️
We are bringing back “Recent Favorites.” If you were here when we dropped our first few articles, I’m sure you noticed the erasure of that segment. Well, it's making a big return in 2025, and this time not just as the tail of our articles but as full-fleshed posts monthly.
